The Healing Benefits of TRE®

Most of you who follow me have heard me mention or discuss TRE® at one point or another. I often mention it in my YouTube live videos as well as in social media posts. I use it with my clients and I practice it regularly in my daily self-care routine. And I'm very excited to be teaching a group class in my home country, Iceland, next month with Deva Laya Guleng.

So what is TRE®?

Tension & Trauma Release Exercises (or TRE®) is a simple yet innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, Ph.D., TRE® safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.

There are lots of benefits to TRE®. But the main reason I love it as much as I do is because it has helped me realize the complex relationship between my muscles, brain, and nervous system. These three kept me safe as a child and they have continued to protect me during the dark, messy parts of my healing journey.

TRE® is the practice of self-regulation. It guides me deeper and deeper into my body that has held tension, trapped toxic beliefs, and emotions for decades.  It also protects me from overwhelm, which is when I'm most likely to experience the symptoms of PTSD.  

TRE® has given me the strength to welcome these feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, frustration, sadness, grief, and depression. I no longer see them as a threat. They appear to let me know something inside me needs to be addressed. When that happens, TRE® provides a pathway for me to manage and process these overwhelming emotions.

® has taught me to trust my body and trust the healing process, which is one of the most vital aspects of the healing journey. As a Certified TRE® Provider, I teach my clients this incredible trauma-releasing tool because it works. If you'd like to communicate your feelings more effectively, to understand why certain situations are upsetting, and to release deep tension patterns in your body that are sabotaging your healing, I would highly recommend TRE®. 

Why does TRE® work?

The muscle tremors caused by the TRE® exercise process is a natural, internal, neuro-physiological response of the body to reduce its own stress and restore well-being. TRE® is a somatic process which, when done properly through a Certified TRE® Provider, can allow an individual to release built-up tension from the body without having to revisit the trauma itself (by speaking about it or recalling memories).

TRE® is designed to be a self-help tool that can be used as needed throughout one’s life, thereby arming an individual with a tool that can and will continuously promote and create personal health and wellness.

It is an effective complementary practice when integrated with other treatment modalities by those in the healing professions, including the treatment of PTSD and anxiety disorder recovery and trauma.
