Use Mindfulness Practices to Heal Trauma

Trauma teaches us to disconnect from our bodies. It’s one of the many ways the body and mind protect us from the pain of the past. The healing journey requires us to learn to be present in the moment, the only place we can effect change.

Research has consistently shown that mindfulness is an important component of well-being. As a result of these studies, valuable insights about both the effects of mindfulness and the underlying mechanisms have emerged. The effects of mindfulness are not only attributed to calmness and relaxation, but also encourage and help us develop complex processes like attention regulation, emotional coping, observation, and time perspective.

Going through this course you will learn step-by-step how to use mindfulness as a part of your toolbox in your healing journey, with professional and peer support to help you along the way.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of maintaining awareness of your thoughts and feelings, bodily sensations, surrounding environments, and breath, looking inwardly in moments of silence to listen to our bodies and minds and truly hear what it is saying, without judgment, just acceptance.

Studies show that even just after a few weeks of practicing mindfulness, one can see many benefits, physically, psychologically, and even socially! It can help with focus, compassion, self-esteem, confidence, anxiety, health and wellness...it can even change our brains for the better. Sounds amazing, right?

Gain practical experience, rewire your brain, and get the support you need to break the cycle of stress and trauma.

The combination of the practice and the psychology behind mindfulness has been proven very helpful for many people. Over several years, this training has benefitted hundreds of people with an approach that helped them better understand the workings of the mind and directly put insights into practice to create a more balanced life.

An important insight I will bring to this mindfulness training is my background in supporting trauma survivors. We will talk about why mindfulness can be challenging for trauma survivors, and I will help you find a practice that supports you where you are at.

Bonus material: Nervous system regulation - (5) short videos. Simple demonstration to tone your vagus nerve and enhance your self-regulation skills.

Important skills and learning in preparation for connecting with the body.

By addressing the essential elements of mindfulness, one by one, this training breaks down mindfulness in a comprehensive way, making it accessible and easy to understand. This training program addresses a different building block of mindfulness in each of the first seven modules and integrates these building blocks in module 8. Change Your Mind, Change Your Life

The beauty of mindfulness and meditation is that the longer you practice, the more you benefit. Even just 5 minutes of conscious breathing can help reduce stress and bring you back into your body. But through consistency, we see that not only does your mental health (i.e. lessen the symptoms of anxiety and depression, greater mental clarity and happiness) and physical health (i.e. improved digestion, sleep, blood pressure) benefit, we can actually change the chemistry of our brains.

Meditation and Mindfulness have been shown to literally shrink the amygdala, which is the center of our brains involved in the way that we experience our emotions. This means that over time, you will actually be better able to regulate and process your own emotions as well as experience less fear and anger. As you can imagine, by regulating fear and anger, we are more equipped to process and recover from the various stressors and traumas that we experience in our lives.

Mindfulness allows us to slow down, be more present, and view the world more objectively. It increases our awareness of not only ourselves but our environment and equips us to be able to handle whatever cards life deals us without completely throwing us off course.
